No, its not surprising. But as a store manager, esp. of a petstore, you should have some pride in your store and you should have some care about neglect and cruelty in your own store. If they aren't really set up or successful in sales of snakes, well, they should stop offering them for sale. Problem solved. If enough people (respectfully) complain to chains such as that, they may actually listen up and consider some other resolution.
Buying those animals doesn't help. But pointing out the issues, again and again whenever observed, might eventually bring some change. Maybe not, but what has one to loose by trying?
