    We're Doomed

It is the opinion of many Social and Behavioral scientists that a vast majority of people form important life, political, philosophical, and spiritual opinions based on what’s trending on blogs, Reddit, social media, and what’s espoused by Hollywood celebrities and other media personalities.

I think to myself, “Surely that can’t be the case. People must still read the deep writings and arguments of long ago. People can’t be so deluded that they come to an opinion based upon such frivolous whims as trends on tech blogs and Twitter and the rantings of people who couldn’t think their way out of a wet paper bag. Surely the average person knows how to critically think. Surely the average person knows how—in the Information Age—to verify statements made by others with researched facts. Surely people don’t pride themselves on their lofty opinions without actually being able to articulate the nuance of their persuasions. These studies must be wrong—surely our world isn’t that bad.

And then I walk into Wal-mart.

    We're doomed.

I have been in public safety for over 20 years. If common sense was was common, I would be out of work.

    Re: We're Doomed

Ask yourself, "Am I of average intelligence, above average intelligence, or below average intelligence?

If you're below average intelligence, that is too bad but the truth is you probably don't recognize it.

If you're of average intelligence, then there are billions of people less intelligent than you.

If you're above average intelligence, then it's safe to say that most of the planet lacks the level of intelligence you consider to be normal.

I wouldn't mind so much but the reality is that the majority vote usually wins the day, and we all know the majority is on the wrong side of the line for above average intelligence.

I think the better assessment is we're bored. It's amazing how bad things seem when you don't seem to have bad things to take your mind off of how good you have it.

    This

We are in a period of time where we've had a few generations of relative peace and prosperity in the US, and as humans we start to expect it. I don't think we are "doomed" but we are definitely due for a very rude awakening like always happens when we get fat and lazy. My only concerns are 1) whether the "safe space" generation will find it in them to win that fight, like our ancestors have always done, and 2) whether our enemies have successfully divided our country enough to where we won't come to each other's aid like we have always done.

    Re: We're Doomed

I have the same sinking feeling of 'we're doomed' as well on a regular basis...I'm young - still less than 30, and all my friends / co-workers seem to live on facebook. These are people that vote and have kids and a fairly technical job, yet the me trying to explain the simple reason hurricanes have a season eludes them...I complain that science is being strangled from importance and they start spouting about which star is featured in people this month...

The world is better than it ever has been in many many ways.

Fewer people are going hungry. Fewer people die of disease. Some diseases that were epidemic have been eliminated completely. More people have higher education than ever before.

Farms feed more people on less land using less resources than at any point in history.

More people have access to information than ever before. People can be connected to more people than ever before.

In earlier days, you might not hear a word from relatives for days... sometimes weeks or months. You might call grandma once in a while, talk to a favorite aunt on the phone when she called for a recipe. Now you can catch up within minutes on any of a number of instant apps.

If you look for doom and gloom, then you'll find doom and gloom. If you look for the advances we've made, for the millions of dollars that the general population donate from their own pockets in order to help victims of violence or weather disasters... if you look at the resources that the general public has available to the least of us... then you'll see a more positive and uplifting world.

The world will never be perfect. But in general, there's more good folks in this world than indifferent folks and there's more of both than of actual "bad" folks.

    Re: We're Doomed

This generation relies so heavily on social media and the Internet it's rediculous. To be totally honest, I think some people don't want to make an informed decision, they'll wait for someone to tell them what to think, and they'll never be willing to see the other side of things. It's sad how when people form opinions, they only want to hear what caters to their belief. Anything else is simply disregarded.

But it is true that you'll never be happy if you only see the negative side of things. We're still adavancing, even if we've taken a step back, we will always move forward in the end.
