I would get a small animal carrying case, or a tupperware that latches really well, and keep this on hand in case you ever need to stash your snake somewhere other than their tank (I'm thinking vet trips, emergencies, etc.) Whatever you decide to put him in, make sure it has air holes that he can't possibly get stuck in, and make sure it latches really REALLY well. If all you have is a shoe box or something like that, put rubber bands over it so there's no way he can sneak out. A pillowcase with the ends tied off is another option. Use those hand warmers, or even a bottle of hot water to keep him warm (use CAUTION because hand-warmers often get too hot for a ball python!!) The easiest solution, though, would probably be to leave your snake and the entire tank at a friend's house until your inspection is over.
