They come in all shapes and sizes, they hold water (for humidity) are easy to clean, look natural Some people only use the hole on top as an entrance, I used to CAREFULLY knock a piece off of the edge, and then use a dremel or sand paper to smooth out the edges. On the top I put fake plants.
They were my (and my snakes) favorite hides when I had display cages !
