I really think this is easier to accomplish with the long tube UVB versus a small bulb. When I get home I can post a picture if it helps. So the distance may be preventing you from getting the heat you want.
And you are correct, you don't want the screen interfering with your light, so if there is any way to lose the screen, or cut a hole, that would be preferable.
