    How to tell the difference?

How can you tell the difference from scale rot and coloring?

It should be fairly obvious, the coloring should not affect the actual scales, they will still look healthy. If it is scale rot, I believe the scales will be affected and actually look as if they are deteriorating, not just a difference in color unless it is in a very early stage I suppose. Your best bet if you are worried would be to post an up close picture of the area and people here should be able to give you a definite answer. If I had to guess, if you can't tell, it's probably just the color but if in doubt post a picture.

I'm pretty sure it's just coloring but let me see if I can get a pic on the female as she is out and about right now
