    Newbie needs help

    Hi all

I am very new to keeping reptiles so please dont all jump all over me having a go at me for not knowing basic things.

I did do quite a lot of research before decideing to keep a BP but obviously there is still soooo much for me to learn.

My BP is in a 3ft viv with a heat mat as only source of heat, this is how he was purchased. Everything i have read says that the temp in his hide should be between 88 and 96 fahrenheit. This it is. But the ambient temp i am struggling to keep above 70 fahrenheit. Even with the heating on in my house it doesnt go above 71 degrees in there. How can i increse it to the correct temp please.

Your UTH is there only to provide a hot spot and not to control the ambient temps. You will need an additional heat source (heat bulb, CHE=ceramic heat emitter or RHP=radiant heat panel).

Is your heat mat controlled by a thermostat? All heat sources must be regulated in order to prevent serious burns or worse to your animal.

Also, 96 is too hot for your BP. 88-92 is ideal and you don't want to go higher.

How are you measuring your temps?

Yes the heat mat is controlled by a microclimate thermostat and i have a separate digital thermometer to check the ambient temp. I will turn the thermostat for the heat mat down then.
I was thinking of purchasing a microclimate evo pro but not sure it is what i need or not.

Ok great! Then you will just need to add another heat source. There are pros and cons to each option, so it's really up to what works best for you.

Also, how much does your BP weigh? Is he/she still young? That enclosure may be too big and you may run into trouble with your snake refusing food.
