Weaned or small?

Hey everyone!

My snakes previous owner said that Pua ate frozen weaned rats. I wasn't sure what "weaned" meant and I thought that meant "small", so I got small frozen rats. Now, I realize that there is either weaned OR small. I've did some measuring, the rats are about the same size as his thickest end, maybe a tiny minuscule bit bigger, but it's about the same size. But is weaned to frozen a huge size gap? Will it hurt him?

I am in the exact same spot as you. But i went up to the smalls from the advice of my local reptile store. I offered the small and she wouldnt take it but smashed a pup like 5 seconds after it entered her house lol

In reality, pythons can handle incredibly large meals. I believe I've read a few times on here that there eyes are definitely bigger than their stomach. Feed the small rats and then get weaned rats after you're done with those. Just be prepared for your BP to spend more time digesting. So to be totally clear, your BP can handle larger meals than the rules we follow. That does NOT mean you should consistently feed huge meals, although the variety in feeding schedules on this site is interesting. you can also see how the first meal goes. If it is a huge lump that leaves the BP lethargic for a few days it may be best to hang on to the smalls for when he gets bigger and purchase weaned in the meantime.

I've had him for about a week tomorrow. Tuesday's are my feed days for my animals, so tomorrow will be his first feed under my ownership. I'm pretty nervous, as I hope he eats. His previous owner said he was a good feeder with a great feeding response. But now that he's in a new home, I'm hoping he takes it.

Sounds like there won't be a problem from your description, at least size wise. No worries! And if he does take smalls, depending on how many smalls you have, you'll find you won't need weaned anymore anyway, because he will have grown bigger lol.

It he doesn't take, it may be too big, or might be the setup is off.
