I am getting a ball python on July 8 and I have one question. My room is usually 73 degrees Fahrenheit and I think I need a heat lamp for the cool side of the tank to keep it at a nice 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. What watt would I need. The tank is a eco terra 36"by 18". Around a 40 gallon. For the hot side I have a heat pad by zoo med. Please help I just want to be sure I am going everything right.

Your better bet is probably going to be a 100w CHE.
Don't forget the thermostat for the UTH.......

Mainly for the UTH. You can use a lamp dimmer on the overhead.
Are you getting an adult? 40 is on the large size and keeping humidity is going to be work.

Putting a dimmer on a che or bulb that is more than needed will do a couple things. The dimmer will allow you to raise and lower the power and let you dial in the temp you want. Cutting the power down to the bulb or che will make the device last longer.

A dimmer is really best in a room that has a steady environment. If the room has large temp settings it would probably be best to use a tstat which will monitor and adjust the device automatically.

There is also another method you could use which I did for years. This also works best in rooms with little temp change. I placed a 100che on a lamp stand. This allowed me to raise the che if I wanted a lower temp and lower it if I wanted a higher temp. Worked well and made having a overhead heat source easy. I didn't have to move my heater when entering the cage which made my heat source last longer. That che was pumping at full power for a year and a half 24/7 and was so working when I quit using it. The only reason I did was because I moved and now have a dedicated snake room that's heated.

Yes, that's a che(ceramic heat emmitter). It produces no light but a ton of heat.

You have to make sure you use the proper fixture with it. Failing to use the right one will burn the che out. I recommend the wire basket style. The other versions can trap to much heat around the base of the che and ruin it cutting its life short. I used both of mine in the wire bracket style and never had an issue.
