Question Summer is almost here, temps are changing.

It's been getting to be a lot warmer around and the temps in my BPs tank have changed dramatically over the last few days. I have one UTH under her hide, and a red lamp over the opposite side of the tank. Usually her UTH temp stays around the 86-89 range and the warm side around 80. But since the air has gotten a lot warmer, things changed.

Lately I've had to turn her UTH almost all the way down where it sits around 76-77. Even if I turn it up just a smidge it sky rockets to 92-96. Her lamp temp I've gotten stable to the same as before, and the humidity seems to have gotten better sticking around the 75-77 range.

I just would like to know if these new temps arent too cold for her. I'm a little miffed that even if I turn the UTH up a tiny bit it goes up by a lot so theres not much I can do about that.

75 is as low as I like to see in my room. I'm happy with anything from 76-83.

Your uth is on a tstat, correct?

Well not really. I have a thermometer probe between the UTH and the part of the tank its on. The UTH itself is plugged into a dimmer switch.

That's what I figured. Dimmers are terribly hard to keep a steady temp when the room temp keeps changing.

This is where the tstat shines. Instead of being a dumb device like a dimmer it knows when the room temp goes up or down and adjust accordingly. A dimmer is dumb, meaning it has no idea the temps changed, so it keeps the power steady which may be too much or little depending on what the room temp is doing.

I'd save up for a tstat. You'll have a much easier time keeping things correct.

They are pretty expensive but I suppose your right. Would you recommend a specific one of maybe one like this?

That is better than nothing but honestly IMHO, not by much. I had one when I was in a pinch and it failed within a couple months in the on position. Luckily I caught it just after it failed and it wasn't able to do any harm. That said many people do use them but I just could not trust it or recommend it after my experience.

My first recommendation is always Herpstat. I have four and they have all given me years of great service.

A tstat is the most important things you can buy for your snake.

Jfc those prices. Ya I'm afraid I'd have to go with the link I posted or something similar. There has to be a decent tstat thats not over $200.

The Herpstat 1 Basic is only $115 and would work fine for you. The Herpstat 1 had a few more features for $139. If you're really tight the Herpstat Intro is $99. They ship quickly.

If you check around different herp sites with classified ads you can run across some gently used ones for a discounted price.
