Installing Herpstat probe in AP T8

    Some advise pls...

Everything's almost ready. Have the T8 built, divider in the center, 2 RHP's installed toward the inner end of each half. I have the Herpstat 2, and just need to place the probe. The recommended placement from Bob at Pro-Panels was on the cool side. So, that's fine, I'm ok with that. But, for anyone using a T8, can you tell me how you got the probe into the enclosure? Did you just drill a hole into the enclosure?

Curious... where exactly did you place the probe? And, did you drill up high, and then run the cord down (assuming you placed lower in the tank)?

Yeah - the holes are maybe 2/3 of the way up and the probe drops down. I then have it secured on the outside of the tank so it doesn't get pushed/pulled out accidentally. And as with any setup, you'll have to play around with your thermostat setting to get the appropriate temp inside the enclosure.

Sorry with the questions that might seem obvious... are you placing the probe in the back of the enclosure? or, in the center? or cool side? I'll probably place it on the cool side, as recommended by Bob... but curious on other placements.

No problem. Yes, the hole is in the back wall of the T8 and the probe is in the back. I use the entire T8 (no divider) and my probe is on the cool side. It's about 12" away from the sidewall on the cool side. With a divider, you'll probably want it closer to your sidewall.

As a side note, I did have it on the hot side at one time, but I found this seemed to adversely affect my Herpstat controls - it would either run at close to 100% or 0%. This caused high temp spikes. With the probe on the cool side, the Herpstat seems to be able to maintain the temp in a more constant range.

Why does he recommend putting the thermostat probe on the cool side? Wouldn't that make the hot spot to hot? This will be good to know since I'll be putting this setup together once I get my T8.

That's what I'll probably do, on the cold side, towards the back. But, I actually have the shelves installed as well, so may have to play with placement a bit, maybe right off the shelf, using the shelf to help hide the cord.

    Thank you.

Re: Installing Herpstat probe in AP T8

I recently set up my T10's with dividers and RHP's as well.

I just drilled a hole just small enough for the probe to slip through one of the vent slits in the back of the enclosure on the "cool" side. I then ran the wire down behind the shelf (used it to hold the wire in place) and have the sensor about 2" off the substrate. Temps are steady where I set them on the Herpstat and snakes seem content. I see them on both sides and on the shelves as well. Must be working LOL
