    Moldy Eggs! Won't Candle!

Hi everyone. I'm a little upset right now. our eggs are on about day 30. When they first were laid, they candled fine. Strong veins. Now, many of them in the tub are moldy, and we can't get them to candle properly. It's almost as if the skin of the egg is too thick for the light to penetrate. I'm so worried. Has anyone dealt with this, and what can we do to save them? Thanks!!!

Substrate could be too wet perhaps? You could try some athletes foot powder to deal with the mould and get the eggsnonto some light diffuser or egg crate to stop them getting too wet? Xx

Try candling your eggs from underneath to get a better idea and do not rotate them.

There is only a few things you can do with moldy eggs

Elevate them so they are no longer directly in the substrate (should this be the issue), referred to as substrateless incubation.

Apply athlete foot powder or Elmer glue (I prefer glue)

After that it's only a matter of time I have hatched some eggs that looked pretty bad however they still candled good, if they do not candle good than there is nothing that can be done, it's game over.

Top #2 and #4 / Bottom #2 and #3 are probably goners. They candle solid yellow? If they do, don't pop them cause they will stink to all hell.

    Red face

Where do you measure your temps in the incubator, in the egg box or the incubator it self? Try some non toxic elmers glue, it can help that wet area from growing... I lost last season 4/5 eggs and this year three. And thats becouse my incubators manual told to put the thermometer inside the egg box, so there where appreantly some heat spikes that coused the eggs sweating and die. Hope this helps, last year my last egg was a pretty bad shape and I did manage to safe it with the glue. Sorry if my english is bad

    Re: Moldy Eggs! Won't Candle!

Hi everyone. Thanks for the help!

To answer a couple questions - the probe of the thermostat is in the incubator, not the tub. And Pit, the eggs are not quite candling solid yellow. They are actually candling a little better now that I am using a stronger torch. It's weird though, I think the mold made the membrane harder to see the veins through. One is not candling too great, might be a loss.

We wiped the mold off of them with paper towels and put anti-fungal athlete's foot powder on them. We even put them in a new tub with new substrate, so we'll wait for now. Thanks for the advice everyone. I will check out the substrate free incubation techs too.

If anyone else has pointers, let me know!
