I went with the double tubs because I couldn't find tubs I liked that filled the shelves. I'm actually somewhat concerned that this design gives a warm side and a cool side, but not really a middle.
They tunnels will shift, but I'm not worried about escapes. You can't really see it, but the tunnels/connectors have tabs that will keep the snake from shifting them all the way out, unless they manage to figure out how to push all four tabs in at once while sliding the tunnel through the holes.
