It is not going to stay in place, the ties are going to catch on the tubs, and he is going to lose heat to the metal rack which is going to act like a giant heat sink.
On the other hand if you look at freedombreeders (one ofthe best racks)its the same thing (heat sink)

I have never seen one in person and I am too cheap to buy one but if the heat is not directed, then yes a giant heat sink.

I have a Freedom Breeder 1030. The heat tape is under a metal section that fits in the back of the rack, stretching across each level. I believe that it attaches to the main rack sections with velcro (so it doesn't turn the rest of the metal into a giant heat sink as the metal sections that house the heat tape aren't directly touching the other metal). I believe that there is some kind of insulation as well.

That is good to hear. Didn't think the big guys would get it wrong.

I don't know how old it is, but I'm at least the 3rd owner. It's built like a rock and I expect it to last a really long time (I got it for a super great deal too ).

That is true but the heat that it generates quickly disapears while in closed (pvc or wood) rack) it stays more in.

So heat sink means that heat element touches the shelf itself? But even if it does the tub is on the shelf so if shelf itself is warm then tub is warmer too

Also how about vision cages? The cable touches the cage itself

Once again, I don't know first hand but I doubt they did in incorrectly. I have not bothered looking much at other racks knowing that I can meet my needs for less than a 10th of the cost. But I know how to work wood, can do basic electronics and I have the tools.
