Was handling Cookie as usual. Nothing different. He was roaming around a bit, so I picked him up and put him in my lap while I checked his tank for messes to clean. He had, of course, left me some, so I replaced his "carpet" of paper towels.
USUALLY I put the loose end of the towel length if I have one under the folds. But I wasn't thinking about it and didn't pay much attention.
I was letting him go back on his own as I usually do (I don't just put him in and leave. I hold him and let him crawl off at his own pace...) when I felt him freeze up.
He tensed up immediately and curled into a tight inconsolable ball right back into my hand.
He wasn't breathing heavy, but he remained very tense like that and wasn't moving much, so I gently encouraged him to unball and stretch out. Usually he would begin sniffing around at that point, but instead he seemed very CREEPED the heck out and kept jerking suddenly at any touch.
At first I thought maybe a bug had gotten into his tank and it had bit him...
but that's when I discovered that my little scaredy snake just got spooked by a paper towel.
My baby corn gets spooked by his own tail fairly frequently... Last time I had him out to change his towels, he (or she) seemed calm enough to put down on the carpet. It's an empty room I had snake proofed, so if he managed to dart out of reach, he still wouldn't get far.
He seemed curious of the surrounding carpet, and was sniffing around everywhere. Perhaps hunting for a mouse trail. When his tongue touched his own tail. He flinched, then immediately flinched again. The second time spooked him into darting quickly away to the first hiding spot (me...) he could find.
Do you have any spoopy snake stories to share?
