So he was in such a sorry state (trying and failing to get it off his face) when I checked I gave him the soak and helped him get the shed off- I didn't want to do anything harsh so I just held the loose skin bits gently and let him pull it off. Everything is now off perfectly (including eyecaps- very proud of him for getting those off, thankfully they came with the head skin easily, and the tail tip). He was super calm too throughout.
He looks like a new snake now and is happily curled up in his hide again. Thanks for all the help, guys! Hopefully the next one will go better!
