Ask specifically if they have experience with the species you're keeping. We had a member recently who's vet tried to tell them their ball was "obese" and the worst case they had seen, but the picture of the snake was actually a scooch on the slim side. That vet would have starved and killed that snake because they didn't understand the thick bodied nature of ball pythons compared to colubrids.
