I'm not 100% certain but he just doesn't look like a calico to me. I still think that he's a pastel with darker than usual dorsal color, which makes his nice high light sides really stand out. Being het pied could definitely influence his appearance, even if there isn't anything specific that you could distinctly identify as a "marker."
