    Exclamation Substrate and UTH?

Hey just got my first BP. I was wondering how to settle this situation, because I don't want to go back to the store (even though I might have to anyway). I got a heating pad and for the intructions and says if I'm going to mount the heating pad on the bottom of the tank I might have overheating if: Thick substrate, on a dresser, on any other types of heat sensitive surfaces. It is saying to avoid injury to me or my snake or both is to mount the heating pad on the side, like on the end of the tank... I know I shouldn't do that because snakes usually want to be near or on top of where the pad is right? I use Coconut Husk for substrate and I don't know what to do because I can't use something else since I don't know if it's considered thick substrate. The Coconut Husk is bark-mulch like.

How thick is your substrate layer? Should be fine just be sure to take your temperature readings directly off the glass under the substrate where your uth is.

The ONLY way to correctly use an UTH is regulated by a thermostat or dimmer.
Your snake will burrow as needed.

Also if you cover your UTH with foil tape sticky side to sticky side will keep it moveable and able to reuse.

    Re: Substrate and UTH?

Thanks. Where the pad will be I made it half as thick as the rest of the cage- half an inch. I hope that's enough.

Enough for what? Are you not using a thermostat?

    Re: Substrate and UTH?

Yes. I use an accurate thermostat where the hot side is.

And I meant "enough" as in to where the heat pad won't by chance heat up too much.

Accirite doesnt make a thermostat, they make THERMOMETERS.
You need to use that thermometer to measure the temperature under the substrate.
Substrate is not meant to regulate how hot an area gets.
Only a dimmer or thermostat can regulate your heat source.
Please refer to my crayola I posted earlier.

    Re: Substrate and UTH?

I have everything settled... I have a thermometer to accurately measure the temperature from directly where the heat pad is. I'm sorry if I confused you or something because I kept on confusing myself somehow on the words thermostat and thermometer. The hot side is at 90 degrees and the cold side is 79. I use probes and gauges but I mostly use the gauges because their more suiting for me.
