    Lots of people use the blank newspaper. I've seen people talk about getting the end rolls of blank paper from the newspaper. I guess you can get them cheap because when they get too small you can't finish out the roll in the printing machines, but there is plenty left for substrate purposes. I like paper towel for the convenience. Better chance of seeing mites and it's easy to clean.

    To each his/her own I guess...
    I never had much luck with paper, although convenient, it still contains trace amounts of bleach from processing. I've actually cultivated bacterial and mold cultures, during med-school, from brand new paper towel rolls. That's my concern, personally. I never heard of putting an animal on paper unless its being potty trained. Something new to me and thanks for the info
