What to look for in a butter?

I've been wanting to add another ball to my collection. Right now I've got a coral glow male, an Enchi female (currently trying to breed now), and a pastel het clown female. After a bunch of looking around the gene that to me looks good and unique on its own and looks great with any combination with the others is Butter. Since I'm working on breeding the coral glow with the enchi trying to get a male coral glow enchi that I will then use for breeding the pastel het clown, who is taking her sweet time getting up to size due to sporadic feeding. In hopes of eventually getting a coral glow, enchi, pastel, clown in the not so near future. So being a male maker I expect most my holdback gene combos to be mostly males. So I feel I will need another female to go with the abundance of male I will have.

That brings me to the butter which I'm thinking a female would be the best to add. I might be an odd ball in that I want my starting stock of balls to be the base morphs of what I want to produce. Combination of im cheap and will cost less initially for the animals, and I find it neat to have the base morphs that show where all the awesome looking combos come from.

Now with my short and long term breeding plans out of the way. What makes a high quality vs a low quality butter. I know that in the end it's what stands out to me. But id like a few guidelines to know the spectrum of quality I can come across, so I can get high quality animals in my collection. I'm in no big hurry to acquire the animal, but if I know what I'm after and come across it, I want to be able to jump on it as apposed to passing it up to see if it's worth while.

You have to know what it is you want to accomplish down the road. A couple things to consider. Will you be going in a single direction with the animal or will you work it in to multiple projects? Do you prefer busy or reduced patterns? Do you like the look of lighter or darker Butters? I am in the same camp as you with the idea of starting from single gene animals so you know what the quality is, and then work it into your plans. That said, don't be afraid to look at two gene animals such as het for Ghost. You are still primarily looking at the quality of the co-dom gene, but you get a little bonus for some other plans later.

I look for bright and clean, but that's me. I want a Butter that is reduced and so bright it almost looks like Butter Pastel or Butter Fire.

Just decide which gender will work best for your plans and then start looking at everything, Fauna, Morphmarket, KS, breeder's websites, etc. Don't be in a huge hurry. When you finally see a snake that you can't resist, then that's the one you should get. At the risk of sounding like a Harry Potter geek, it should choose you. I spent two years looking for the right Pied. I ended up buying a Pied Ghost because the Pied part looked like what I had envisioned. Best of Luck

If your eventually going for a clown you will need another het clown or clown. sounds like your in it for the long haul with the coral glow enchi pastel clown remember your going to have a fair amount of babies to eventually get what you want and they need to be feed and cleaned up after.

I would consider trying to get a few animals that are multi gene just because it might speed up getting your dream snake, but stick to the price range your comfortable with. the genetic wizard website is a great tool in helping figure out the probable outcomes of a clutch based on the parents genes, I would take a look at that if you haven't yet. if you like butter than you'll also like lesser they are the same. good luck !

Thanks for the advice. I think it would be better to look for one that is get clown so it'll go with my main project. And from the pictures I've seen, I do like the looks of lesser clowns. Though I'm not sure of exactly which end of the spectrum of butter/lesser is like better. Though I'm leaning towards the lighter side with more flaming. I guess it's time to start doing some looking around.

Are you interested in butters or lessers? Because while they have the same genetics good examples of the lines look very different. A good example of a butter is darker and more yellow and warm with more reduced patterning and none of that strange silver color on the flaming. A good lesser is more of a pale, cold, silvery color and has more patterning.

My preference is the butter line. I like that more warm yellow as opposed to the silvers. I also like that look in the combos more.

Sorry to hijack the thread slightly but if you guys all get a minute could you have a look at my new Royal - supposedly a Butter but a couple have said it's something else possibly - photos in my snake collection thread - seems rude to post photos in this thread ..
