Congrats, I've very happy for you, and your new companion. (:

I'd like to add that I think some people's parents are much more lenient and accepting of things such as bringing a new animal home unannounced. I personally don't feel it's irresponsible to bring home a pet unless you do so and are unable to keep the animal properly for 'secrecy reasons.' My family was always known as the 'zoo house' when I was growing up, so for someone like me, bringing home a new animal didn't really bother anyone, so long as I was/am responsible for its care upon being introduced to our home. I'm obviously unaware of the OP's situation, but just my two cents.

Yeah, it depends on the household. Kicking in a little cash to cover the extra electricity use, or maybe helping a little extra around the house would be a nice gesture to show appreciation.

I got kinda slammed for being "negative" elsewhere last week for questioning a girl's choice to bring home, behind her father's back, a parrot, of all things. She was even hoping there might be a way to keep the bird's natural screaming down.
    Sheesh. Whatever.

    Congrats on the new snake!

In that girl's case, I think it's completely reasonable to be a little "negative." If you aren't prepared to accommodate an animal's natural instinct or keep it healthy, you simply shouldn't keep it. It's sort of like the people that think their cats should be vegan... bunch of loonies. I'm not bashing vegans either, because I am one, but I also don't feel the least bit bad about feeding my animals their natural food source. Lol

There is some leeway with parrots, their behaviour can be more obnoxious if they are stressed, or if the bird becomes mate bonded to the owner. That said, they all make noise, and some species are just really ear piercing loud anyway. Regardless of who pays for the bird's care and does the work to care for it, everyone sharing a household with a parrot has to put up that parrot. The girl's father HAD said, "No." She shrugged it off because he had said "No" to the last bird she bought.

Times have changed, apparently, but I thought her attitude and intended course of action was inappropriate.

I agree, birds aren't the sort of pet that are 'out-of-sight-out-of-mind.' I haven't had the pleasure of owning a parrot, but I've had many other (smaller) bird species, and even they could become very rowdy when they felt like it. Haha.

Yeah, sometimes people do things for all the wrong reasons just to prove a point. Which I think is a shame, especially when the life of an animal is involved. The fact that she was explicitly told not to and went ahead and bought the bird anyway is pretty disrespectful and irresponsible in my book.
