Petsmart sucks.
I went to pick up rat food and fuzzy mice for my baby corn Tanzanite last night and having my toddler with me I took the tour of all the animals. They had 4 ball pythons, two normals for $39 one that had soaked substrate it was sitting in, a banana for $349 and another labeled as "fancy" for $99 that looked to me as another normal except for the really bad shed covering its head.
I spoke to a member of the staff and got a brush off that it was fine but thank you for bringing it to their attention.
I can't stop thinking about the little guy with the cruddy shed. I hate how they have their snakes, not enough hides, no idea on the temps in there because the only thing I saw was a little humidity gage reading about 50% in the bad shed tank. I'm sure swampy up above was much higher but he had nothing in his to measure.
I did the responsible thing and didn't buy anything there and went to pet supplies plus instead where I never see the animals in cruddy conditions but I'm trying hard to not go back and get the little guy. I keep telling myself they will only put some other snake in there to suffer if I do but... ugh.

Re: Petsmart sucks.
You are doing the right thing by not purchasing that poor baby. I know it is heartbreaking to see all that and I don't shop at the big box pet stores myself anymore for the same reason. All we can do is speak to the staff and hope they make changes. If you buy that poor baby, you would just be justifying another replacement and that snake would suffer the same fate. It is very tempting to want to help them all but we have to think about the big picture when it comes to things like this.

Contact the corporate HQ and tell them you shopped at a different store after seeing how poorly the snakes were kept. Money talks.

This. ^^^^
This may be the best advice I have ever seen. Big box stores will never fix anything until it starts costing them costumers
Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired.

from what I understand about petsmarts corporate policy, HQ would be extremely upset to hear of these conditions. I would at least talk to the manager first (assuming you only talked to an employee and not the manager) and give them a chance to correct the issues before doing that though.

Re: Petsmart sucks.
I bought my girl from petsmart..didnt realize it was a bad thing..her and all the others they had at the time looked to be in good condition (SC store) &the girl that i actually spoke to about the snakes got really mad about how another employee had put 2 in one tank together and set up another tank right away..the only bad thing i saw there would be how small the tanks are and only one had any foliage other than a wet cup of moss in them they all had gauges and such but i that ive read all the comments i completely understand why it's not a good choice..thanks for the insight guys!

This as well, but have a friend or two do it as well. If you tell me the store location, I'll call them and say something similar as well, see if we can get the snakes properly cared for. I avoid pet smart and pet co because of that exact reason.

Re: Petsmart sucks.
I worked at petsmart for a year and a half. Awful experience, and the fact I could do nothing about it and almost got fired a few times for trying too. Just had to remind myself at the end of the day that they are not my animals and I'm not the one putting them in those conditions... I've seen tons of animals die from the awfully kept husbandry. I've talked to my managers many times with the same response "it's policy. If we don't follow policy I could be in trouble" and I've sent multiple letters to the higher ups with no response. There's not much we can do besides try to show what horrible companies these places are. Some employees really do try their best to keep these animals healthy, but it's to no avail. But at the same time some of those animals go to even worse homes... So really it's fighting fire with fire

I quit because of the constant death I saw and I DO NOT support big name pet stores anymore

I almost never go to a PetSmart.
Amazon, and Dr.'s Foster & Smith (others too) have everything I need on line.
