... I've heard they can be temperamental and I've NEVER heard of a puppy take one which all kinda makes me wonder ...

I've had over 50 carpets over the years and all the babies were nippy. The adults calm down, but all of my adults still take the occasional shot just for fun. The fact that the snake is "hooked" out of it's cage at cleaning time should tell you something.
