I have all 20 of my snakes in large tubs with no hides, even my hatchlings get a big tub with no hides. I use Reptichip and dig a hole in the back over the heat and put them back there, they stay in the hot spot 'hole' most of the time. Sometimes they crawl out for water and to cool off. The benefit of having tubs is that you don't have hides and nothing but the tub to clean. You need some kind of a substrate that you can dig a small hole in if you go without a hide, maybe if you had only paper substrate you'd need a hide. I've seen people put enough paper that the snake hides under the paper layers too... The only bummer about a small snake in a big tub is that when you have to change the substrate you are changing out more than a small tub, but in reality you don't have to change out the substrate as often with a smaller snake in a large tub. My hatchlings get ARS-70 series tubs, mainly because I don't have a hatchling rack yet, but they all eat great and are doing fantastic.
