question about tub/rack setup and hides...

Let me get this straight, i know the answer but i want to make sure because after so many years of having a bp in a acuarium, im used to 2 hides. But its too my understanding that if i were to have my BP in a rack system, i would NOT need a hide? or is it just one? or still 2?

UTH to a thermostat would still be there aswell as a waterdish (obviously) but how necessary are hides in a dark rack/system?

Depends on the size of the snake and the size of the tub. For a small-ish snake in a large tub that will hold two appropriately-sized hides and a water bowl, go ahead and give two hides.My adults in 41-qt tubs either get one hide, which they "turtle" on and off the heat themselves, or no hide as long as they are eating ok and seem comfortable without one.

vic turns 6 years old in around march, and i have had him since he was a hatchling, started on a 10 gallon, then a 20 gallon for about the last 4 years. WIth 2 hides. He is 1450ish grams.

Looking to move him to a 32qt tub. with just one hide. I can put him in a 41 qt but thats only cuz i will need the space for the 2 hides, if its just one hide, 41qt just looks like overkill.

also if im going to be using just one hide, should it be placed in the hot side or the cold side?

I have all 20 of my snakes in large tubs with no hides, even my hatchlings get a big tub with no hides. I use Reptichip and dig a hole in the back over the heat and put them back there, they stay in the hot spot 'hole' most of the time. Sometimes they crawl out for water and to cool off. The benefit of having tubs is that you don't have hides and nothing but the tub to clean. You need some kind of a substrate that you can dig a small hole in if you go without a hide, maybe if you had only paper substrate you'd need a hide. I've seen people put enough paper that the snake hides under the paper layers too... The only bummer about a small snake in a big tub is that when you have to change the substrate you are changing out more than a small tub, but in reality you don't have to change out the substrate as often with a smaller snake in a large tub. My hatchlings get ARS-70 series tubs, mainly because I don't have a hatchling rack yet, but they all eat great and are doing fantastic.

And also, if you buy a commercial rack system, it will most likely be setup for heat tape anyways. Much more economical and efficient than running UTHs under each individual tub in the rack.

I use a single hide in my tubs. All the snakes use them.
