    My Son Bought a Snake!

My son has been wanting a BP for some time now and he finally got the money together and pulled the trigger. I found a local breeder (Sam from Elite Constrictors here in Utah.) and picked up a male Pastel-Lesser-Calico at 703g when I got him home. AMAZING SNAKE! We are so fascinated and are having a blast learning all we can about BP's and their husbandry... I have some pic that I will post and a link to a couple of YT videos of him snooping around the cage and his first feed. There are 2 videos of him feeding, the first is 20+min of him eating the small rat. The 2nd is just a video of the strike and some slo-mo. Anything you see wrong or suggestions for the set up of the tank would be greatly appreciated. I believe the first video of him in the tank I have not yet had time to set up the tank fully so the back is not painted black yet and my temperatures were off just because I had barely put him in that cage. TIA

Congrats! That's a gorgeous snake. You guys will be great keepers, thanks for doing all the right research on how to care for your new noodle~! I couldn't tell from a glance through at the vid, but the tank setup looks okay so far! If he seems stressed you could add more hides (in glass aquariums having a hide on each side, warm and cool, is ideal). If you don't have a thermostat I highly recommend getting one - under tank heaters especially can get out of control very fast. I once unplugged mine from the thermostat just to see (no snake in there) and within 15 mins a heat gun had it reading 125 degrees!

He looks really nice! He could make some killer babies if you ever decide to go down that road haha

Re: My Son Bought a Snake!

Thanks kxr! We're thinking about breeding him when we know a lot more about snakes... We heard that with the morph we have (Pastel-Lesser-Calico) that we could get "white" snakes... We would love that but not sure what to look for in a mate to have this happen...

Yep! Your male has lesser in him so by breeding him to anything in the BEL (blue eyed leucistic) complex will give you a white snake. To get the best quality leucistics you'd probably want to go with another lesser.

Personally, if I had a lesser I'd avoid producing BELs for the most part because I love the color of the lesser and what it does when you breed it into other morphs. Don't get me wrong I love BELs too, it was one of the morphs that helped start my passion for these animals, I just don't like the fact that you can't really change lucies. You're stuck with a white snake at that point, a great end point but not much room for progression haha

Either way, there are lots of things to consider once you do decide to get into breeding (if you do)
