    GTP Enclosures

Okay, so with me maybe getting a GTP, though I wasn't going to get one until next year as I had plans to get some other species first, this deal came along, and I can likely save a bit of money. The thing where I'm undecided is whether to get the enclosure or not. For an additional $100 I can get the enclosure that it's been in, but I'm unsure about it mainly because I've yet to see it in person. I have no idea if it's actually something that was made for a reptile as so many people custom make enclosures and what not, so I'm perplexed based on that. Just based on the pictures, I can see gaps in the top where the light is visible so it makes me think this is just something that was converted, but if it works properly and holds the heat/humidity then I suppose it's fie. Then again I still want to actually see it in person, because it's hard to judge things by pictures, however here are a few pictures of the enclosure, then a picture of the GTP.

    Now the snake:

Maybe Im not seeing the size of the cage correctly but it appears that the cage is WAY more than that lil GTP needs. Young GTP don't need a large cage.

It also does not appear to me that the cage in the pics is an actual snake enclosure and seems to be a converted cabinet. I don't even see a latch other than the regular internal cabinet door pressure catch. If it were me I think Id pass on the cage and set the GTP in a tall tub for the time being. Cheap and easy.

Then Id buy another cage like my GTP is in from PVC Cages. It is a top notch enclosure. They use thick material and when I ordered mine I had it built and then shipped. It is the nicest cage I have. I have a male GTP and he is very comfortable in the 24x24 I got for him. Many go with the 36 wide and for my next cage I might do that as well.

http://pvccages.com/ Looking at their site it the 24x24 with a RHP, LED light, and perches is $335 shipped.

I need a larger rack for three of my Bloods and then I will be looking to getting another cage from PVC Cages for a ETB or another GTP, but Im hoping for the ETB.

I dunno, I haven't seen it in person and I try not to make any decisions or judgements based off pictures. If I have to get an enclosure, all bets are off then because I have other snakes on my priority list and that would push them back and GTP are always readily available, versus Black White Lipped pythons which aren't always available, especially not at an inflated price. I also don't know the exact size of the GTP so I would have to see him and go from there.

I can't tell the size of the snake either. It would have been nice to have something to see scale.

The cage though seems like more work than good. It is much too tall for a RHP to provide a nice gradient and I don't like that. It also seems really large which means more difficulty in heating and humidity.

All I can do is judge from the pics but IMO I would not take the cage. Not for $100. Unless it has some great stuff coming with it to make it worth something like a nice tstat, light, or RHP. The cabinet itself is not worth anything to me and I would only be using it as a holding cage until the proper home arrived. Then Id junk it.

It would be nothing to build a small perch system out of pvc for a taller tub and set it up in it. I have also found that by using a lamp stand and a heat lamp you can heat a tub just like a glass tank with screen lid. I had to do this when some cages I ordered didn't ship on time and I was in a crunch needing a better home for my big Blood. I put her in a under bed tub with a lamp pointed at an angel on one end. It worked great to give a hotspot, good gradient, and good ambients.

If it is something you feel even the slightest bit rushed to do or there is any doubt, skip it and wait for what you REALLY want.

The enclosure is pictured in a shadowy background and it's difficult to see how it really looks.

I think saving, waiting and getting everything the way you wanted is the way to go.

I mean I do want a GTP, and the fact that I could walk out with the snake for $225 means I'm getting cheaper + I'm avoiding shipping is what I was originally looking at. Though I think I'm going to wait as I'll stick with my plan to get a GTP after I've gotten my black white lipped python and the two other APCages. I don't do tubs unless dealing with a rack system, so that's out of the question so I'd be forced to buy the exo terra tank.

    Good plan Neal,

I think you'll be happier down the road. Nice cages are half of the fun and if you snatch up some quality AP caging the snake part will fall into place. I like your white lipped python choice as well. They are a bit rare and you'll have something special when you get one.

Well I have a line on a ETB and Im going to try to pick it up this week. She is a few years old and is said to be really tame by her owner. He says she loves coming out and has never tagged him. She has some good white marking and some bright yellows. Looks like Ill be ordering another PVC Cage sooner than I thought I would be.
