BP Sleeping near top of the cage? Not sleeping in hides?
So there is a branch that extends towards the top of the cage and she likes to sleep up top of that (nearly next to the light) rather than her two hides (which are her cold/warm hides).
I've kinda noticed she doesnt like her warm hide at all (which is an angled log) or maybe doesn't know that the side with the warm hide has a UTH under it. Right now I'm using a
blue light to warm the enclosure a bit more thinking maybe she was higher up cause itd be warmer but shes still sitting in the same spot (yesterday she slept in the same spot without the bulb) for when I turn off the lights for the night.
I can update with pictures when it isnt night time.
I used to have a rocklike hide on the warm side where she slept herself in between the hide and the glass in the corner for warmth (not even inside of it lol),
but I moved it and put the log on the warmer side and the rock one to the cold (maybe I should switch these around?)
Where she sits is about 77-80 degrees, her cool hide sits at around 73-75, and her warm hide is maybe like 87-94 ish (since its both bulb and UTH). Humidity is at about 50%.
Using one of those instant thermometers, and a digital measure for humidity. She lives in a 18x18x12 terrarium.
Is this just her being weird? She is new, juvenile about arms length. I just figure BPs like to sleep in their hides more than not. I got her a couple of days ago and I think I landed the enclosure for the most part.
Just need to find a 2nd hide she actually enjoys. I've only ever seen her go into the rock hide and never the log (log is a little new, maybe its too small or too hot cause its on the heated side?).
Other than that, outside of the enclosure she is very active and sticks her tongue out a lot and is very gentle with whoever picks her up. Doesn't stiff up (in fact she is very eager to go full length
and explore about, even if its just my shirt or something).

They're not arboreal snakes, so she's definitely telling you something. Keep the hot spot right around 90 and put the rock back there. At least she was on the ground with that one. .. I use the exo terra caves for mine and they love them. .. make sure your temps are perfect and then she should figure it out for herself. But in my opinion, a BP living high up in a tank is not normal.

I've heard that BP's often will favor a hide if they have 2 different types, so a lot of people will get identical hides for both sides so the BP doesn't have to choose between warmth and feeling safe/comfortable. In your case though with your BP not even choosing a hide, I'm not sure. As the above post, I would suggest trying to keep the warm side right around 90. Sorry, I know that wasn't very helpful.

Hi
To be honest I don't really trust those thermometers you can get for vivs especially those stick on ones which are simply useless , the ones with wires and probes are better but I also use a digital temp fun off eBay ( £10 ) . These provide very accurate temps for any areas that are important .... under the hides in this case ...

When I first got my snakes I bought the angled logs too but they never used them, it's not going to give them the security they like. Reptile basics has some really good hides in different sizes that are great because they are easy to clean, not pretty but practical.

Re: BP Sleeping near top of the cage? Not sleeping in hides?
Thanks everyone for the replies! She's now sitting in her cold hide (the rock) now that it is daytime,
I haven't moved anything yet and just plan to buy another rock-like cave for the warm side and remove the log since she partakes no interest in it. May just remove it completely until I have the new hide.
She only seems to like to be near the top during the night time though which I still find weird. For my thermometer btw it's one of those hand-held instant ones that take the temperature immediately (thermometer gun?).

Re: BP Sleeping near top of the cage? Not sleeping in hides?
You should not have a temp variance of 7 degrees on one side of the tank. I.E. you said it runs from 87-94??? Thats way too much change. As the others said that should be kept right around 90 and your cool side 82-84. The advice given on hides is also correct, make sure they are identical and provide appropriate security- dark and snug the reptilebasics one while plain and boring are very functional and good for the snake. They are also inexpensive which is a plus. Your UTH is on a thermostat i hope?

i might have overexaggerated on the variance haha, the temp gun kinda reads the bulb sometimes and then sometimes it doesnt. going to do some new reads once the new hide i got her warms up a bit.
