It surprises them only a little bit, but they don't freak out. They just "wake up" and look around. I stroke their back and they know they're about to be handled, and are overall calm. Hatchlings and younger ones are relatively more easily startled.

Apparently, accidentally spilling an ounce or two of water from his water dish onto the paper towels next to his hide and splashing him isn't recommended. He came out of his hide ready for a go.
Luckily it is a warm day and it'll evaporate quickly. I'll probably wait an hour before I stick my hand in there to put the dish back...
