For me the sex of the animal would depend on what other breeding plans you have for the animals or atleast the male. It also depends how much you want to spend and what you can find. You can go with het pieds but I'd just pay for visuals to avoid trying to sell off hets.

See that's my thing I don't really like hets for one reason other people may think I'm lying to them (too cautious).... What do you mean by other breeding plans do you mean if I wanna take him and breed him with another female besides that one? Could I take the male and throw him in (at separate times) with different females in one breeding season? I'm new to the breeding scene if ya can't tell iv researched till I couldn see straight but I still have a lot of questions.... Thank you

1 male can cover several females.

For the result you want and to do it with budget in mind
Get a female Pied or a Female YB Pied first, raise her for 1 year to a year and a half and than get a male OD YB Het Pied or a Male OD Het Pied.

Why would you suggest the female be visual pied? In myl mind from a budget stand point I would look for a male yellow belly or orange dream pied and then find a female of the other het pied. Ideally you could find a od yb het pied female as pied combos can be so expensive.

Because the female Pied is a lot more valuable than a female het pied in the short and long term.
If someone can afford Orange Dream Pied Male buying a female het pied or even YB het pied would not make sense on the breeding or financial aspect of it.
When you want to breed you have to be smart about both in the long and short term, this is why some people never make their investment back or break even.

I see what you are saying about a female pied being worth more. Couldn't you argue the same for a male pied being worth more than a het pied as well? I was under the impression that it makes the most sense to spend more on a male as a breeder because it can pass its genes to several females. In this case you can get into the same genes for less money. I wonder how breeders scale from initial price based on single genes versus multiple genes. You are right about od pied but I certainly have seen some reasonably priced yb males. At the end of the day I know you have more experience in this matter but I just had some thoughts.

Male Pied are valuable when working with het females but if you work with an elaborate combo like OD YB Pied it really make more sense to use a Pied female and a OD YB Het Pied, that male will be valuable and the female can be worked in other projects as well.
The end goal being to produce as little number of hets as possible in the future by pairing Pied something to Pied
I still have het Pied but those are slowly being replaced by double het and Pied combo females.
Always think about the big picture

Wait, were we not both talking about using a het pied animal? Would not the chance of producing a het pied animals be the same regardless of sex gene distribution? I totally agree visual pied animals would be ideal for gene production but also the most costly. Lets talk about prices. You can get a yb pied male for around 600 and I am guessing a od het pied would be around 300-400, for a total of around $1000. The only yb od het pied male I could find was listed for 1500 and a deal on a female pied would be 300, so about $1800. I am really having trouble seeing where that is a better value since you get the same offspring percentage. Not to mention you could pick up a pastel het pied female and produce some beautiful pastel yb pieds for another $60. Help me out here to understand where you are coming from, I am honestly curious.
