Question How do I keep my Ball Python happy and healthy?

Today, I picked up Burrito from a friend's house. He just moved into an apartment that doesn't allow reptiles. He gave me a tank, heating pad, a heat lamp, a terracotta pot, a reptile carpet, a water bowl, and a plastic log. I was told to feed her a thawed rat once a month, keep her water bowl filled, and leave the lamp and pad on all of the time. Is any/all of this correct? Is there anything else I should do or buy?
Also, how do I go about properly handling the snake?
    Thanks in advance.

Make sure you correct all your husbandry including regulating that heat source with a thermostat or dimmer.
