His infection came back so suddenly and so hard and no herp vet was open at 5:30 AM. He died in my arms. He was my "therapy snake." I am so in shock that I can't imagine ever being okay again.

I I feel like I'm going to throw up or pass out or die. I don't know what to do.

It must be my fault.

The snake was 2 years old and starved. It fit in the palm of your hand and has spent its life slowly dying. If it was neglected as you said, it was probably also dehydrated from the inside out over that time, permanently stressed out, and falling to pieces.

You did not kill that snake, it merely died in your care. At least the end of its life was closer to how it should have been, so it could have some semblance of joy before it went. I'm sorry for your loss, but don't beat yourself up over someone else's negligence.

I am so sorry for your loss but I do not agree with this being your fault. You did everything you could. You loved him and gave him the best possible care. That is all you could really do. Perhaps in time, you will be ready for another snake. Please don't beat yourself up or you will cause yourself undue stress and harm. Just know that all of us are here for you and willing to help you through your grief.

No. It wasn't your fault. You did the best you could, his past life was just too much for his body to handle. Sometimes when an animal is starved, it weakens their organs and that causes organ failure later on. Or weakens them to the point that an infection can take over so quickly.

I hope you can find some peace that you did all you could and gave him a good life, much better than what he had before. Take care of yourself

I'm so sorry. You didn't kill him, his previous owners neglect did. Just take pride in knowing you did everything you could for an animal that could not save itself and you made the end of its life much better.

I hope in time you find yourself ready for another snake and you can give one the life it deserves from birth.

Oh, Hon, I'm so sorry. You did what you could for that snake, any time you rescue an abused animal there is always the chance of sudden death. I adopted cockatiel that had been abandoned in the store I worked in, nearly a 1000$ in vet bills and six months later she died suddenly just when I thought she was turning a corner. Part of working with animals is losing them, things will be okay. Hugs!

Thank you all so much for the kind words. I can barely believe it myself, but I revived him when I was about to put him in his burial box. I gave him a bit of air and then held a low-heat blow dryer over him for a bit. He's still acting kind of odd and a bit shaky but he seems much better. Tongue flicking etC. Certainly better than dead. I will see his new herp vet tomorrow morning.

It's a miracle! I hope he makes it, poor little dude's had a rough time of it. He may need to stay at the vet's (if they have a snake ICU), but at the very least I think he'll need injectable antibiotics. Sending good vibes that the vet can get him on the mend!

I didn't know it was possible to revive a dead snake. that's actually incredible. I don't know if he is gonna make it, but I'm sending good vibes his way.
