Question about breeding.

Hi Guys,

I've got a 20 month old normal male ball python who is het pied and I'm picking up a Lemonblast female on Saturday who is a few weeks old.


Is this age gap too big for them to start breeding in a few years when the female is ready? Currently my male is about 925 grams or so, so he's ready, but for how long?

If I'm not mistaken, its at least a year and a half old AND at least 1500 grams. They can go at less weight but it is not recommended.

It a combination of weight, age, and proportion.

1500 grams well proportionate and 18 months or over would be a good minimum.

During that time please do some research thinking about breeding is great doing research on it is really a must and most info are out there.

Research genetics but also ask yourself the right questions, what are your goals, can you afford breeding, how will you incubate, will you build or buy your own hatchling rack, will you start breeding feeders or do you have a reliable source once you have to start your hatchling, what do you plan to do with the offsprings, sell them than where, what if they don't sell, what is the current market for what you are planning on producing and what do you think it will be when you will produced your first hatchlings.


I can tell you that I would not waste that female by pairing her to a het pied male instead start saving and by the most gene you can afford in a male. Single gene and double gene animals especially those that have been around that long are very hard to move as the market is saturated, so this is something you want to take in consideration unless you are prepared to keep all the offsprings.
