I think you answer your on question on why not to do it as for that

I suppose I could pick them up and then try to sell them for a profit

I can tell you my name and reputation are far to important to me to vouch and re-sell animals of unknown history with who knows what kind of issue possible that could actually cost you more money than you will make.
