where to place thermometer probe at inside tank
i have a uth heater that is On a thermostat the thermostat probe is attacked to the heating mat under the glass. and is set right. but i have 2 more temp and hydro probes to monitor the inside of the hides. question is where these probes are to be placed. i currently have them down on the glass under the aspen shavings. issue with this is that the temp says its 90 degrees but when i use my infrared gun the ground says its 77 degrees on the top of the aspen. is this placed correctly or should u drill a hole in the hide and attach them to the hide its self

this is what I did, and I am no expert, just saying...
I have my UTH controlled like you, probe between the glass and the UTH.
I have 2 more probes, I on each side of the hide, which tells me the temp right at the opening where the snake enters the hide. then I have the probes attached to the top side of inside the hide, so I know what the temp is in each hide, and also what the temp is on each side of the tank along with the temp of the UTH.
I am pretty sure this is pretty redundant however I like to see what the temps are all around the tank. my thermometer of choice is the accurite000891 I believe. shows 2 temps ( in and out) and it also shows the humidity.
hope this helps you!

Re: where to place thermometer probe at inside tank
You've got the probes placed correctly. The temp on the glass is most important.
The substrate is pretty much there to absorb waste, so it doesn't need to be all thick and cushy for your BP. As long as you think along those lines, your BP will be able to thermoregulate as it needs to.

ok so having the probes for the thermometer in the bedding is more important. measuring the ground temp is what im looking for correct?

Re: where to place thermometer probe at inside tank
Having one of the probes at the hottest point is what's important. For you, that means the temp of the ground immediately above the heater.
Your BP can/will push the substrate around and your job is to ensure that it's safe for it to do so once it reaches the bottom.

Re: where to place thermometer probe at inside tank
Perfect. You're right - aspen doesn't transfer heat well. It also doesn't need to. Your BP will do what it needs to do as long as you've set it up properly to do so (which you have done). Great questions - and great job!
