    When to give up

I have a now over 2500 gram albino girl that is between 5 and six years old. This girl eats like a pig. She has gone through three seasons now. She was bred once by her original owner and twice by me. She has good locks almost every time the male is put in with her. The male is proven and has been the father of three clutches so far. Do I give up on her or keep going?

I personally keep pairing until ovulation or I'm unhappy with the physical build of either adult.

Keep going, she'll produce eventually and if she's eating well hopefully it'll be a nice big clutch! I've had a cinnamon female eat right up until the week before she laid so there's always hope!

Yeah, that's kind of what I am doing but I have not ever seen anything like this. Same proven male for 2 seasons 2-3 times a month good locks and what I mean by this is I have been breeding her almost every week for over a year. She went off food in December for a month was pretty sure I had an ovy then nothing. The boy is at 1300 now and he has never went off food. My other girls at some point want nothing to do with the male. Not this one. She's like the energizer bunny. Just no babies.

Have you triple-checked to make sure she isn't a he? I have a three year old male that has never fasted and is well over 2000 grams.

LOL. Yeah. With absolutely no doubt a female and good locks.

It happens just frustrating, I have a girl just like yours, I've attempted to breed her for three years, and nothing, thought I had an ovy this year but nothing came. I don't do think I'll try again with her. My thinking is maybe her cycle is just different than my other girls, most of mine lay within a week of when he they did the year before, could just be a coincidence though

Males will lock with other males. Put her in a bin with another female that has been locking with males and see what happens. I had a similar issue with a female het Albino. She was huge, 3000+ grams and 5 years old. The first two seasons (when she was 2 and then 3 years old), lots of locks but no eggs. When she was 4 she had a nice clutch of infertile eggs. Year five she did not produce even after lots of breeding action and I sold her as a pet normal. Not every snake will have the ability to reproduce. I would give her a break from the males for the summer and when the fall comes put her in a bin with another breeding female and see what happens after 3 days. If she does not lock with the female, then try pairing her for three months during the fall/winter. If no eggs, I would sell her as a pet. But that is just me.

    Re: When to give up

I had females producing their first clutch at 6 years, some taking a 4 year break in between clutches etc.

When do I give up during the season? When I see no progress by June/July I stop.

When do I just give up on an animal, not until I have tried a few different males.

Might be something to this in my case. I bought this girl at the same time as another one from the same place. This is the first year I bred one of them and she went very late compared to everything else. She just had her pre-lay shed 2 days ago and I have no doubt at all that I had an ovy on her.

LOL, you have me seriously questioning my probing skills. She came from a pretty reputable place as an adult girl so I guess I will not feel to bad if I screwed up. If she is a he it has to be the girlyish looking he I have ever seen. I do not have enough stock to put her with another girl right now. This would really mess up what I have going on. Even if she turns out to be a dud, I won't be able to get rid of her. She is one of my daughter's favorites. I will be glad when my daughter realizes that sometimes you just have to let them go.

I guess I will stop soon. She was locked again this morning before I left for work. I have two other males that I logically could put her against next season but it is really going to shake up what I had going on. I think my expectations were set a little high. I have been very lucky so far and I was hoping it would hold. Knocks my REL project back a year. I should have had another albino female in the mix. I am a little further ahead with my lavenders. Can't win them all.
