First shed isn't necessarily an indicator of how good or bad a job you've been doing. If he's still having patchy sheds in a few months, then we'll know there's a definite problem with humidity or substrate or temps to work on, but I think you'll do fine. Just make sure to pay attention to it.
It sounds like you did a good job handling the situation this time, but it's easier to get stuck shed off using a cloth towel than a paper towel -- it grips better -- so you might want to try that if you need to help him again. Congrats on a shiny, happy python!

Nice. And remember, don't get down on yourself over a bad first shed. Remember, usually the first shed reflects more on the previous keepers husbandry. The next shed should be better if you're takin care of him good. And I'm sure you are.
