Gotta love myths and misconceptions, eh? Personally i think some folks are just too freaked out about their general limblessness - how agile they actually are vs how improbable it would seem that they be so. i think the same logic applies to a much lesser degeree with anything more than 4 legs. As far as hard myth goes many eastern mythologies hold snakes in much more positive light (their various devils not having assumed that form to trick mankind etc) - one of the earliest "dreamtime" cave paintings from aboriginal Australia is actually of a liasis fuscus - and many other more ancient cultures featured serpents in their creation myths.

(EDIT - this might be transfered to general herp as it isn't really just BP related)

I think that the true evil in relation to snakes, is the way they are mercilessly killed on site by many ignorant people. Whether it's venomous or harmless, whack it in the head with a garden spade and get rid of the vile thing!

All biblical and mythological connotations aside, I think that people fear snakes, and thus hate what they fear because they cannot control it and that bothers them.

In my view, wild snakes are much less evil than my neighbor's mangy dog. The dog knocks our garbage cans all around our yard, and the snake eats bugs.

Bein' Chrsitian I acually do believe that the devil took the form of a snake. But I don't that makes snakes evil. I think they just give some people the creeps. If you think about it it is kinda wierd, a long legless tubelike being that can move swiftly and silently through almost any terrain without any legs. But I think its completely bogus to say that just because the took the form of a snakee that all snakes are evil.

IMO snakes are just feared because of the unknown, ppl that seem to fear them or avoid them, usually do so because they dont know anything about them..ofcourse, animal planet dont help that cause.

Take a room full of first graders and offer to let them hold a 10' Berm. all of them would be running to hold it. take the same kids ten years later and you couldn't get 2 of them to get with in 15 ft of the thing. Why they have been programed by parents and tv that snakes are better left in the wild because they are dangerous. More children are bitten by the family dog that " has never bitten anyone in 8 years of having her" than their pet snake. It suck that they are givven such a bad rap.

Being a complete atheist, who doesn't believe in a soul and has doubts about even whether true consciousness exists, I obviously do not feel snakes are evil. From a completely objective standpoint, something would have to have the capacity to at least reason and subscribe to some generally accepted ethos. Not to mention, good and evil is simply a matter of perception. Strictly on an objective basis, I think you can make a much better argument that a person who drives an SUV is evil.

Personally ... i dont think they are evil. My computer is more evil than my snakes are. I've gotta agree with Freakie_Frog about the first graders and 10 years later. KLG's graphical display pretty much sums it up!
