    Separate tank feeding?

The question is: does it actually work?

Ive had my baby pastel ball python for about a month and I've just been feeding her in her tub, despite what people have been telling me. She hasn't ever struck me or displayed aggressive behavior.

So, is it just an opinion?

Does it work based on what kind of snake it is?

Feeding outside the tank to prevent striking or agressive behaviour is one of the oldest myth around.

You are actually more likely to get tagged by feeding outside the enclosure.

It's really unnecessary. Think if the big time breeders did this how long feeding would take.

    Re: Separate tank feeding?

Exactly what Deborah said. It is thought by some that bps would associate there enclosure with feeding but they do everything else in there. Feeding in a different tub is all the snake is going to associate with that tub which means it will know it eats there and that's all and then you have to get the snake out while in feeding mode and with a full stomach which greatly increases the risk of being struck or possible regurge from unnecessary movement and stress. You can feed and then leave them alone for the 48hrs your suppose to when feeding in enclosure. Feeding in there normal cage IMO is safer for both you and your snake.

Agree with everyone else. I've never fed outside the cage. Most of my snakes are totally fine for handling. The ones that are jerks, are jerks, because it's their personality. Got nothing to do with the in-cage feeding.

The place I bought my BP from, used a separate feeding enclosure...So I followed suit, and have been using a separate enclosure since day 1 with my BP. 3 years later, she still gets fed in there and I can tell her attitude changes when I bring it out...She is very docile, and I can pick her up and put her in there with no fuss (unless she's in a mood)...When I open the top, she's poised and expecting her supper.

The only time that you really need to use a separate container is if you keep multiple snakes in the same enclosure, not really recommended but I've done it for short periods when I run out of space. I've also seen pet shops that keep multiple corn snakes in the same tank and separate them for feeding. I actually started with separate tubs, the problem is that you have to pick up a snake with a big mouse bulge in his belly (not good) and then try to grab him and move him when he just ate and is in feeding mode, a huge risk of getting bit. Plus I've had some really picky eaters decide not to eat after being handled, that's when I started not using tubs to feed. Plus the risk of escape with multiple snakes is higher, just more time consuming and you tend to try to rush things and end up with snakes crawling on the floor LOL.

    Re: Separate tank feeding?

I'll be honest I feed in separate containers but that's for two reasons. One I keep track of them on paper. What the feeder weighs and their pre feed weight. So I'm taking them out to weigh them anyway. Second and more important than the first is i feed in separate containers so they don't accidentally swallow any substrate. Minor plus is while their eating I can quickly run thru their tank without them bothering me.
