1200 is the absolute smallest I would go. And for a first time breeder, I recommend at least 1500 grams and 3rd winter.

It's a question of weight and age, this is not a race take your time, do you want to breed and get 2 or 3 eggs? Do you want to breed and risk your female's health?

As a minimum I would suggest at least 2 years of age and 1500 grams but really the bigger the better.

Sure you can breed smaller females 1000/1100 but those to me are special case of female that are 4 years or more have remained small and that I would breed to kick start their appetite.

I wonder what's next breed at 600 grams, seems like breeding weight is getting lower by the year?

If you REALLY want to breed asap, go out and buy a big proven female. Don't rush your girl.

As easy as that is to say, it can be a long time coming between where she's at now and 1500 grams.

I've had females blow conventional wisdom out of the park and grow like crazy. I've also had females hit that 1000 gram wall like a freight train and tease me for months on end as all of the other girls their age were starting to get paired up.

Ultimately, they are the ones who decide when they're ready.

Should she? Hell no, and it would be foolish to try. Rules of thumb get that way for a reason.

I have started small but that is too small imo. The smallest female ive started pairing was 1,100g. She ended up laying 4 eggs.

So what would you do with a 4 year old that doesnt and hasnt gotten over 1000g? Yes she a consistant eater but weaned only.

Im on the fence on waiting another year.
