Ultrasound Machine

Hi all,

First post here. I've seen quite a few breeders using ultrasound machines to check follicle growth. Does anyone here have own one and have any recommendations on which to get?

Would a portable one like this be okay? ebay link

My husband and I recently purchased a portable laptop-style ultrasound... the instructions that came with it are [edited: Engrish and difficurt to undurstand], but now that we've got it figured out, we think it is a worthwhile investment for us, and we keep track of follicle growth/decline on spreadsheets.

The thing to remember is you'll need one hand to hold the snake and one hand to hold the wand. You might could do it with that.

^ This. And if you have a wiggle-worm, it can be more than a 2-hand job. My husband and I usually work together - he does the ultrasounding, and I keep the wiggles in check.

This is the one we got - if you're using it on snakes, you need one with a flat probe, many machines come with a convex probe and require you to buy another, and they are expensive. We made a deal with the seller, so don't think you can't make a lower offer, (we price-matched one of their other models because it was essentially the same, different probe).

For those of us who are inexperienced in palpitating, it's nice to be able to see how the follicular development is going without all the guesswork.

Can you bring anything to a thread that is your own original thought or value add, as opposed to being contrary for the sake of being contrary. It's tiresome. I'm all for people expressing their opinion but you don't appear to have one until someone has expressed theirs first, and then you are all over it making it sound unworthy.

Try less provocation and more thought provoking.

Because even with my 10 years of breeding I can't feel 2mm folicals or tell the difference between 10mm and 12mm if you're want to not over work your males ultrasounds are useful tools. They allow a breeder to pair animals when it is most advantageous for the male to properly copulate at the key times in follicular development. It mean a male can breed 8-10 females without stressing him self out or wasting sperm in the process.

So yes you can feel follicles but with an ultrasound I can see them measure them accurately and overall get a much more accurate idea of where in the development a female is.

I suggest everyone learn to palpate females but an ultrasound is another tool in the bag of tricks.
