    Definitely never inside the tub. The thermostat probe needs to be placed directly ON the heat tape so that it is touching. I usually put aluminum tape on the cord just below where the thermostat sensor is. Then tape the cord down on the heat tape so that the probe is directly in contact with the heat tape. This is the only way you can accurately know what temp the tape is.
