The thought process or reasoning behind pairings

I was doing some thinking and realized that a lot of thought goes into pairing snakes but what is the thought process behind those pairings? The most prominent example I could think of is the idea of making snakes that the breeder in question personally likes or what is currently big within the industry but both are generally based on what already exists and what has been done before.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are breeders who actively think on what would look good together. What I mean by that is that, they make a combo, either by accident or on purpose or as a test run, and then they think about what else could be added to that particular combo that would bring it to the next level.

If you got a new morph that no one has ever seen before, what decides what you put it with first? One thing I've noticed is that when a new morph shows up, the first thing people do is put it to pastel. I'm not entirely sure why, but it seems to be a thing I've noticed.

I guess the question is, what are your reasons or thought process behind the pairings you choose. Is it because you just like the possible combos, have a specific project in mind, or are you merely just experimenting?

I breed for what I like, but I also think about what combos to make. I think Leopard goes well with almost anything. I want to make the first Leopard Soul Sucker this season. The first Leopard Mystic Potion has been made and I love it.

I paired up males with females which would give me the chance to hatch something I want or give me something for the future like how I paired my Clown male with my Leopard female to get some Leopard het. clowns, and I also bred my Clown to my Orange Ghost to get some double hets, so most of the pairings I did this season are because I really like the possible outcomes and 2 pairings are for future projects I really like

Part of the "game" seems to be Bold is Better, so it makes sense that the first thing into a new morph is something to crank up the brightness. I think it's pretty intentional - you crank it up a level with Pastel, and then you can double it with super Pastel... other common enhancements seem to be Fire, Vanilla, Enchi. Or on the darker end of the spectrum you've got Cinnamon and Mojave - those Mojave GHIs are no joke!

I pair the animals that would give me the chance at producing something everyone wants in their collection. Also, I enjoy producing a few of the morphs I want in my personal collection.

There are a bunch of morphs that can darken or lighten others, I'd say the reason pastel is so prominent is just because it's older than most morphs, it pretty much always has a positive impact on other morphs, and it's a co-dom that has a super that doesn't mask anything. Pastel is just super predictable and super reliable for combining with other morphs. Not to mention pastel looks so much nicer as a hatchling so it helps sell new morphs.

I breed what I like to produce, animals I do not own yet and want to see in MY collection, some that already exist some that don't.

I focus only on specific Pied and Clown combos.

I prefer light morphs and reduced pattern in general.
