Food Temperature and Humid hide
Hey all. I'm pritty new to owning a bp and currently have 2 questions.
Iv also never used a forum so have no idea how this works really. I hope I have put this in the right place!
Iv read a couple of things about mice/rats exploding when the snake grabs them when there to hot and was just wondering what sort of temps do you guys heat yours to ? Or is it sort of play it by ear ?
Iv currently been heating the rat pups in a sandwich bag in hot water
Also iv been looking at putting a humid hide in as soon as wiz (my super pastel female) shows signs of shedding and was wondering how you do it. For example where do you put it hot side or cold ? Do you just line the bottom of the hide with sphagnum moss or put it all around ? Anything ells I should know ?
Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you

Re: Food Temperature and Humid hide
Scott- I usually thaw my feeders in a bowl of warm water inside a ziploc bag. When the feeders are completely thawed I'll use a blow dryer to heat them up to about 100F before offering them to the snakes. As far as humid hides I use a plastic container filled about 1/2 way with damp sphagnum moss. I usually put mine on the cool side of the tank but you could probably put it anywhere in the enclosure.

Agree. Mouse should be about the temp (inside and out) as it was when it was alive. If it is cold or still frozen inside, it can hurt your snake, if it is too hot, it can hurt your snake, and if you leave it out too long to slowly thaw, the bacteria can build up.
....all of which makes it sound harder than it is.
A temp gun will give the easiest reading.

It does sound complicated lol
I've done alright so far so I'll keep what I'm doing and juat check it with my temp gun.
Thanks both.

Re: Food Temperature and Humid hide
Well iv been really careful how I thaw and heat the rats for my bp and has been going so well untill today. I was absolutely gutted when she grabbed the rat and it's belly split open pouring guts all over her. I heated it in warm water untill it reached about 35°C - 36°C but it still happened. I'm really hoping it's a one time thing.
I got most of it off her but couldn't get it all as I didn't want to stress her out and risk bringing her food back up.
