where can you buy them? can you get them from somewhere like home depot or lowes? or do you have to get them from a petstore? im thinking about getting a couple for my snakes. could someone explain how they work? does it stop temps from getting to low and to high? thx in advance

a thermostat regulates the temperature by turning whatever you have it hooked up to (light, heat pad, etc) on and/or off as the temp increases and/or decreases. you set the thermostat at the temperature you want your enclosure to be and that is where it will keep it. you can find some thermostats here. i use this one. there are some rheostats on that page also, but don't get one of those. they don't work the same, and in my opinion are not nearly as good as a thermostat.

i don't know about getting them somewhere like home depot--i've never looked for one there.

I'd keep it on the cool side, so that you can make sure if the snake gets overheated there will always be somewhere cold to go to. If you measure only the warm side, you may not have somewhere cool enough for the snake to go when it needs to get out of the heat.

i actually keep the thermostat probe on the hot side right over top of the heating pad since that's what i have it hooked up to. that way is keeps the floor temp on the warm side at a constant 90* which is what i have it set too. i have the accurite base on the cool side, and the probe on the warm side under the warm hide. that's just what works for me in my setup--keeping the cool side cool enough isnt' a problem in my tank. but now that you mention it, i can see how that could work well too, i just hadn't thought to do it that way.
