SOLID advice right here. I bought a cheap thermostat, and it did the job... but a month or so later, I broke down and bought a good one (Herpstat 2). Much nicer, and if I wold have went with a good one in the first place, i would have saved myself $50+.

My advice would be at minimum get a Herpstat 1. Those have all the bells and whistles with safety. I personally use a Herpstat 1 and a Herpstat 2. Like others have said, invest in a good T-stat first. Even with a PVC cage, you will still need a T-stat to run the RHP or UTH. I would say, just set up a tub for right now and order an AP cage and in the time it takes to get to you, you will have time to pony up the cash to get a RHP and of course get the T-stat now.

Also Boaphiles is not fast either. Pretty much no pvc cage company is going to get you a cage in a week. Minimum would be 3 weeks but more than likely 1-2 months. You got to remember, they got to build and ship out cages for all the people ahead of you...and there are a lot across the whole US.

So if I following all my reading correctly I should be all set with a Herpstat 1 along with a RHP or UTH in a tub or PVC cage because they tend to hold the air temp and humidity better then glass, removing the need for a heat lamp..? Also is there a Forum supporting vender that sells the Herpstat that you recommend?

Yes, a Herpstat 1 with a RHP and PVC cage and you should be fine. You will still need basic stuff like a thermometer, humidity gauge, water bowl etc. I use http://www.acurite.com/environments/...red-probe.html. Also depending how cold your room is, you might need a UTH which in that case I would recommend a Herpstat 2 instead but you would need a really cool room. I keep my house around 75F and my 65 watt Pro Products RHP keeps my 4x2 cage plenty warm.

And yes you don't need a heat lamp. You might want to get a under cabinet light from a hardware store to just light up the cage. You can get something like http://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-18-in-...6466/100384834 which is what I use on a lamp timer or you can get the fancy led ones from Reptile Basics which is probably what I will do on my AP cage.

As for ordering a Herpstat, just order straight from the manufacturer. Go to Spyder Robotics. I ordered both of mine straight from them and the shipping was actually cheaper and it got here pretty fast.

Lol I hear ya. When I was a kid, our local reptile shop, the owner had his store pets which were a couple of 11' burms as well as a roughneck monitor and there was none of this pvc caging. You hacked up some 2x2 to make a skeleton and then sheeted plywood to it for walls and used heat lamps with mesh cages around them. heck my first ball python was kept in a 55 gallon tank with a screen top and a couple heat lamps. He thrived and ate like a horse. People don't realize that snakes aren't delicate china plates, they are pretty hardy. Things have definitely come a long way from when I was a kid...

So true man, I'm looking back at the homemade setups I had and think how did I do all that and have such great results. Can't wait to see how these guys act with all the new options!

    Re: PVC Cage companies

So my herpstat 1 is in the mail, I'm picking up my tub ill be using while he's a baby. When it comes to UTH are the all created equal or is there a certain one better? My local store has zoo med. I hope to buy one that can be used on the tub then onto whichever PVC cage I buy.
