    F/t or prekilled

I have one snake in my collection who refuses to eat f/t. Well, he has taken one in the past year to be honest, but usually smells them and then goes back in his hide. I have been giving him
live and he eats no problem. He takes medium rats but am wondering if I prekilled them do you think he would take them? I just don't want to see him get bit by some aggressive rat or one he strikes near the rear, but I also got tired of wasting rats he wouldn't take.

    Re: F/t or prekilled

Well to be honest the only way to find out is to try. My snakes seem a bit unpicky. They will eat rats and mice F\K or live. I have never fed F\T to any of my animals due to there being very few vendors of frozen thawed in my area besides Petco or Petsmart which I don't go to due to their ignorance in care for animals (at least the store near me). I also breed my own rats so F\K is pretty easy. Try it out if he doesn't take it you are just our one more rat. You could also do the tong block where you watch for the strike and wrap and if it is bad and the rat is in a position it can bite the snake put the tongs in the rats mouth to block the bite.

I have never had a snake injured from a live item. I can't use live rats though so I guess I can't say "I know what you mean". Here in Alberta it is illegal to have live rats so it makes it impossible for me to feed rats live to my snakes. But I do feed live ASFs... and I have been bitten by these guys. Its no walk in the park. But I have never had any issues with my snakes getting bit. Snakes are pros at taking down prey so it really isn't something you need to worry about.

As for fresh killed, I could never kill ASFs or mice myself so I again, I could not tell you how it works but it never hurts to give it a try if you are up to it.

if you try and he/she does not take cant you feed the rat off to one of your others? i would definitely say give it a try. If the ultimate goal is to switch he/she to F/t this step in-between might help?

    Re: F/t or prekilled

He is eating mediums and the rest of my snakes are on small or weaned rats. I guess I could buy a small rat and kill it and see if he will take it. Then it won't go to waste if he refuses. I am just thinking my wife wont like me killing it at home.

    Re: F/t or prekilled

For my F\K i use a co2 chamber. I also do feed live to my original BP and my corn. Also the snakes that eat crawlers get then live. All my other that are on weaned or above get F\k. When i fed F\K mice i just broke their necks The crunch always got me though so i moved on to co2. Never killed a rat by neck breaking but probably the same as a mouse with a bigger crunch ( i know that imogi means rage but it looks like a cringe to me lol)
