    The misadventures of dear Germany

So my young boy is 434 grams. Hes about 9 months old, ill get his exact bday again soon but im estimating. I know hes not a year yet though.

He is a mojave spider het hypo. Major wobble but hes adorably cute even so.

Germany hates heat. He avoids it at all costs no matter what i do. So, when he started breathing funny (sounded like whistling) on Sunday i watched him like a hawk. His husbandry is all right i believe. his humidity is at a constant 50 to 60 unless hes shedding to where its bumped to 75.

His cool end is anywhere from 78 to 82 and his hot spot sits on 88 to 92. His thermostat is monitored and we take temps with a temp gun every two hours even with the thermo. I just dont always trust technology. I may be playing it overly safe but id rather be safe than sorry.

Anyway, i got him to a vet today finally. They weren't available sunday or monday. So i took him in. Somehow, little guy got a RI. They gave him a round of antibiotics I'll be going back on friday for another check up and potentially another round if they're not satisfied with his progress from today.

With the heat, though, is there anything i can do? He avoids it no matter what, i can turn it down some, i can leave it move the UTH, etc. Nothing works. He stays at the cool end. Is this something I just shouldnt worry about?

Re: The misadventures of dear Germany

How are you measuring the temperature on his cool side and your humidity? I'm seeing if you're measuring surface temp or ambient temperature.

Ambient temperature is important. With ambient temps of 78-82, your BP shouldn't get an RI. My constant ambient temp is 78-82 and my snakes are doing fine (i don't provide a hot spot).

How much are you handling the BP? A photo of the enclosure might be helpful as well.

Not sure about the med so hopefully someone can chime in on that.

Your temp gun may be reading low. I have two of them, plus half a dozen of the little infrared thermometers. One of my temp guns - the priciest one, go figure - consistently reads 3*F lower than all of the other point thermometers, which read within 1/2 *F of each other.

If you are 100% sure you have accurate temp readings and he still avoids the heat, turn your temps down a bit. Keep turning them down until you find a range where he is comfortable.

Your snake is telling you something by avoiding the heat 100% of the time. Listen to him.

It is okay to use pine bedding for snakes.
It is okay to feed live food to snakes.

I'm still waiting on results from the vet. He's keeping me updated though.

I only have one i never thought of that, I'll have to look into something else to use. I do have three thermometers probed to the bottom (hes the only one in a tank, and its set up using the guide in the husbandry section). I've got them measuring the cool, center, and hot end.

But a little update on him. He's breathing normally, and acting normal again. i tried turning the heat down again and he actually went on the hot side for a bit.I'm looking into a new thermostat, just to see if that's the issue. I'd hope not, it's fairly new and not even a year and a half old. It's a vivarium electronics ve 100.

The others have a helix to control them in their tubs.

I'm still taking him back tomorrow, despite him acting and breathing normal, because that doesn't mean anything. He's currently peeking out at me from his hide, though whether it's me he's actually looking at is questionable.

Now the vet said don't offer him food right now, but i just fed everyone else and he seemed a bit excited, should i not feed him? The vet said don't offer because he won't eat but his activity towards the scents says otherwise? Or should i wait until tomorrow after the visit?

Is the one on the hot side measuring the ambient air temp or is the probe on the floor of the tank under the hide? If it's just measuring the ambient air then move the probe under the hot side hide for a while, if you can.
