    Probably safe for the snake. I've seen several posts with thermometers or hygrometers in the cage, however, your snake will knock it over at some point. Also, you'd really need to stay on top of the batteries, check often any corrosion. I used to have a wireless thermometer, the kind where the sensor is placed in one room and the gauge can be places elsewhere, and my snake seemed to enjoy "cuddling" the sensor. It was way to big to eat, nearly the size of a computer mouse, but I'd find him looped over it almost every morning...it threw off the temps by about 6 degrees
